Keeping our backyard beautiful.

It’s simple really, we believe all businesses should do their part to work towards making our world a better one, and we also believe we need to start by focussing on our own backyard first.

That’s why Spice & Co have started - The Backyard Project - a project that is dedicated to ensuring we can support a range of great New Zealand charities that are doing amazing things. The Backyard Project is funded by our brands, who contribute towards ensuring we’re doing our part. As they grow, the fund grows.

Keep checking back as we’ll be updating our website soon so you can see exactly who we’re supporting and what they’ve been able to achieve with this support.

But it doesn’t stop there, as a huge part of our emissions are based on our suppliers and partners. So how do they stack up?

Sustainable Bottles

Facts about our Bottles. We work with Saverglass group for our bottle production as they have been committed to sustainable development and have implemented industrial and technological manufacturing processes that are environmentally friendly, economically efficient, and socially responsible. The use of cullet (recycled glass) in Saverglass’ industrial process offers major environmental benefits:

  • Reduction in the use of natural resources, as cullet is a substitute for raw materials (sand, limestone and soda ash)

  • Energy conservation, as glass melts faster and at a lower temperature than natural raw materials

  • Limitation in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere (the use of 1 ton of cullet prevents the direct emission of 250 to 300 kg of CO2)

  • Reduction in the volume of waste, therefore preventing additional waste

Sustainable Cans

We work with Visy to manufacture our cans who have an in depth recycling and company environmental policy. The aluminium cans we use are 100% recyclable and contain up to 70% recycled content. The Aluminium recycling process also doesn’t damage the chemical structure of the product and is the most cost-effective material to recycle. Plastic bottles, on the other hand can only be recycled around eight times before they are sent to landfill.
